This is the line that is bigger in Lapland.
Kela, general housing allowance 2026. The allowance is at most 70 % of accepted housing costs, and an allowance below €15 is not paid.
Lapland’s average rent is €13.10 per m² against €15.94 nationally (Statistics Finland 2026Q2). Rovaniemi at €14.55 sits between the two.
Hundred-kilometre distances and a long heating season. The price of a kilowatt-hour and a litre is the same as in the south; the quantity is not.
Early childhood education fees and free schooling are national. For a family with children the biggest saving in Lapland is the rent.
Is Rovaniemi an expensive city to live in?
Not by rents: the average €14.55 per m² is below the national €15.94 (Statistics Finland 2026Q2). In studios the gap is small (18.66 against 20.46), and in new tenancies a Rovaniemi studio costs €21.17 per m², roughly the national level.
How much does a single person need per month in Rovaniemi?
We only calculate what has a source: a 30 m² studio about €560 a month (18.66 × 30) and electricity at 1,800 kWh a year about €41 a month (1,800 × 0.270 / 12). Food, internet, insurance and transport come on top according to your own habits.
On the same terms as anywhere in Finland. In Rovaniemi a single-person household’s housing costs count up to €447 a month, in other Lapland municipalities up to €394, and the allowance is at most 70 % of that (Kela 2026).
There are two Laplands when it comes to costs. Rovaniemi is a university city where students and tourists compete for the studios; in the ski resorts the price follows the season. On the coast and in the small municipalities housing is roomiest and cheapest, but a car is compulsory.
Below are the four lines a monthly budget is really made of: rent, electricity, getting around and children. There is no Lapland-specific statistic on food prices, so we do not guess at one.
Examples: a 30 m² studio in Rovaniemi about €560 a month (18.66 × 30) · a 50 m² two-room flat in Rovaniemi about €720 (14.35 × 50) · a 75 m² three-room flat at the Lapland regional average about €820 (10.97 × 75).
The exception is winter in the ski resorts: at Levi an 80 m² alpine cabin cost €750 a month from May to November but €2,000 a week in high season (Yle, 25 May 2023). A year-round lease on the same flat was €1,650 a month. The resort price is not the Lapland price.

Examples: a two-room flat using 3,500 kWh a year: 3,500 × 0.229 = about €800 a year, or €67 a month · an electrically heated detached house using 18,000 kWh: 18,000 × 0.141 = about €2,540 a year, or €212 a month.
The price is a national average. Lapland’s heating season is longer than the south’s, so the same house burns more kilowatt-hours here; ask the previous tenant or the landlord for last year’s consumption, it is the best estimate you will get.

Example: a 40 km daily commute, 22 working days, 7 l/100 km: 880 km × 0.07 l/km × €1.93 = about €119 a month in petrol. In central Rovaniemi you can live without a car; in a fell village the car is part of the rent even if the lease does not say so.
